Over the past few decades, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, a very difficult condition, has become extremely common amongst school-aged children. This issue makes it very hard for children to focus and can often lead to delinquent behavior, through no fault of the child himself. Furthermore, the condition can extend into adulthood as well. This makes it very difficult for adults to work at standard jobs due to an inability to focus on the task at hand.

Often, physicians will recommend certain behavioral techniques to parents which are designed to help patients cope with the symptoms of ADHD. In some cases, these sessions can work wonders and patients can go on to lead normal lives. However, in many cases, patients do not realize results through behavioral therapy interventions. In these cases, doctors typically prescribe focusing medications such as Ritalin or Adderall.

Interestingly, there may be some natural, safe chiropractic treatments that can also help with the symptoms of ADHD. In this article, we will take a closer look at ADHD and demonstrate how chiropractic care may be able to help children (and adults) deal with this issue.

What Is ADHD?

As was stated in the introduction, ADHD stands for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. There is much that is misunderstood and unknown about this condition, but what we do know is that there seem to be three primary factors that lead to ADHD. These factors include 1) Genetics, 2) Brain neurochemistry, 3) Environmental toxins.

Of each of these, we can really only speak generally, as research is ongoing and the field of ADHD research is still in its infancy.

As far as brain chemistry is concerned, researchers have found that the brain of a person with ADHD differs significantly from that of someone without the condition. Specifically, certain neurotransmitters such as dopamine may have trouble getting to their destination or being produced in sufficient quantities. As a result, there are often issues related to motivation and focus which are characteristic of ADHD sufferers.

Symptoms of ADHD

The classic image of a person with ADHD is that of a child running around and essentially bouncing off the walls. While this may be an accurate depiction in many cases, it doesn’t necessarily tell the whole story of ADHD symptoms or the patient who suffers from ADHD.

Children with ADHD may also experience extreme levels of frustration and depression as a result of not being able to function in the same way that other children do. They will often fidget with a toy for hours on end, and may even resort to picking at their skin in order to keep their hands busy.

Chiropractic Care and ADHD Treatment

Again, it bears repeating that ADHD is not well-understood. There are still so many questions that need to be answered before we get to the point of being able to point to specific causes and very effective treatments.

However, we do know that there is a connection between the nervous system and ADHD. For this reason, chiropractic care may play an important role in managing this disorder.

By performing specific manipulations and treatments, chiropractors may be able to reestablish spinal connections and help patients with ADHD better deal with the symptoms of the disorder.
