We’ve all experienced sleeplessness at one point or another. However, few of us have ever truly suffered from insomnia. People with insomnia generally have a tough time falling asleep, staying asleep, and getting enough sleep on a nightly basis. Luckily, it seems as if chiropractic care can be beneficial for insomnia sufferers. If you have insomnia, read on to find out more about what chiropractic care can do for you!

What Is Insomnia?

As was mentioned in the introduction, insomnia refers to a condition in which patients have difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep, and accumulating a sufficient amount of sleep on most nights.

Contrary to popular belief, insomnia is not a condition that makes it impossible to sleep. In fact, humans can’t go for very long without getting at least some rest; our bodies aren’t able to handle a lack of sleep for more than a few days.

Who Can Develop Insomnia?

Truthfully, insomnia can affect nearly anyone. That being said, we often see this condition in older female patients.

It’s unclear exactly why this is the case. Some possible reasons for older women developing insomnia more often are a high level of stress, physical injuries, and other issues that can keep a person from achieving adequate sleep.

On the other hand, many cases of insomnia have been reported in college-aged people. So, again, it’s unclear exactly why specific demographics of people develop insomnia while others do not.

What are the Symptoms of Insomnia?

As you might imagine, some of the main symptoms of insomnia are restlessness, fatigue, and general exhaustion.

However, these primary symptoms will often result in secondary symptoms such as decreased focus and difficulty communicating with others. Many of these symptoms can make it hard to hold down a job or to complete daily tasks.

In rare cases, patients with insomnia may experience cardiovascular symptoms or problems with other body systems

What are the Common Treatments for Insomnia?

Insomnia is a tricky condition to treat. As is the case with most tricky conditions, there are many proposed treatments for insomnia. Unfortunately, the majority of these treatments are ineffective, and some of them can even lead to dangerous side effects.

Often patients with insomnia will seek ways to “knock themselves out” by using medications or alcohol. Put simply: this is a bad idea. These drugs will cause tons of ill effects and can permanently harm the body and mind.

Over the past few decades, some alternative treatments have been used to address insomnia. Cognitive behavioral therapy, lifestyle changes, and other natural treatments seem to work very well for decreasing insomnia symptoms.

One such alternative treatment is chiropractic care.

Chiropractic Care for Insomnia

As was mentioned earlier, physical ailments and other similar problems can often cause insomnia. Therefore, addressing these issues can go a long way toward eliminating insomnia symptoms.

Chiropractors focus on realigning the spine through the use of treatments known as spinal adjustments. These adjustments, also known as manipulations, serve to keep the spine in perfect alignment.

When the spine is in the optimal position, signals can travel more easily to and from the brain. This enables the body to heal more quickly from any injuries. As a result, many insomnia sufferers, who are being kept awake by their physical aches and pains, will have an easier time falling asleep.
