Chiropractors have been around for a long time. In fact, some scholars say that the profession began in 1895. Interestingly, other historians point to instances of manipulation being used to treat ailments much earlier than this date.

We could quibble about the specific start date of the chiropractic profession, but it’s clear that this area of health and wellness has helped many people over the years.

However, despite the fact that chiropractic care tends to be a very effective option for the treatment of many conditions, there are tons of misconceptions that continue to circulate about the profession.

In this article, we will highlight 3 of the biggest myths about chiropractic care.

Myth #1: Chiropractic Care is Dangerous

Major stories have sparked skepticism about the safety of chiropractic manipulation over the years. But this accident, while incredibly devastating, has been found to be extremely rare. In fact, the risk of complications after cervical manipulation is estimated to be roughly 1 in 1,000,000

For perspective, over 2 million people are injured in car accidents each year. Furthermore, nearly 250,000 people die from medical mistakes each year.

These statistics are not meant to alarm anyone or to defend any action that led to the death of another. Any death or even a minor injury is absolutely tragic, and no one should downplay the seriousness of what has happened to a small number of people over the years as a result of spinal manipulation. However, it’s important to note how incredibly rare these instances are and how effective spinal manipulation can be for pain relief.

Chiropractic care is safe and effective. Further, your chiropractor will take every step possible to ensure your safety during your visit.

Myth #2: Chiropractic Care is Expensive

In many cases, insurers will reimburse chiropractic care. In those instances where chiropractic treatments are not covered by insurance, your chiropractor’s office will often offer a reasonable payment solution so that you can receive the treatment you need, without breaking the bank.

Expensive is a relative term, and everyone will have different definitions for what they believe to be “expensive.” But even by conservative estimates, an incredibly effective treatment that is often covered by insurance, and is very affordable otherwise has to be considered a good monetary choice.

Myth #3: Anyone Can Become a Chiropractor

Chiropractic school consists of a rigorous course load over the course of 3-4 years. Not to mention, most chiropractic programs want their students to have earned a bachelor’s degree prior to applying for the doctoral chiropractic program. Chiropractic school ensures that all graduates are competent and knowledgeable in the fields of anatomy and physiology, as well as the other sciences necessary to practice chiropractic.

So, technically, anyone could become a chiropractor. However, this statement could also apply to doctors, lawyers, and other professions requiring intense schooling.

In summary: chiropractic education is arduous and it takes years to earn the right to become a Doctor of Chiropractic.
