You probably already know that chiropractors can effectively treat back pain. You may have even seen a chiropractor in the past for your own back pain symptoms! But many people may not be aware of the wide variety of conditions that respond well to chiropractic treatment. For this reason, we have compiled a list of 5 conditions that can be treated by a chiropractor.

Condition #1: Sciatica

Sciatica is the irritation of the sciatic nerve, which runs from the low back to the feet. The sciatic nerve can be “pinched” or otherwise irritated anywhere along its path, but primarily, it becomes inflamed due to one of the following reasons:

  • Protruding disc in the spine,
  • Piriformis muscle tightness/dysfunction,
  • Inflammation or irritation of any structure in close proximity to the sciatic nerve.

Whatever the cause of sciatica may be, chiropractors are well-equipped to treat the condition. Through joint manipulation, massage, stretching, and/or other methods, your chiropractor will get you back to 100% as quickly as possible.

Condition #2: Headaches

It may surprise you to know that headaches can result from a variety of different causes. One of the most common causes of headaches is the cervicogenic headache.

This throbbing, painful condition affects many people every year and is usually caused by tightness or dysfunction of the neck muscles. By releasing the tension in these muscles through massage or other techniques, the patient often feels immediate and complete relief of headache symptoms.

Other types of headaches which chiropractors treat include migraines and whiplash-associated headaches.

Condition #3: Vertigo

Vertigo is a very complex phenomenon involving multiple systems of the body. A very specific and very common type of vertigo is known as Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo or BPPV.

This issue is due to a problem with the “crystals” of the inner ear. Luckily, with a quick positional movement known as the Epley Maneuver, symptoms of BPPV can often be resolved in under 30 minutes (and sometimes even less).

If you’ve ever suffered from this condition before, you understand just how bad BPPV can really be. Some people would do just about anything for relief of these symptoms. But if you suffer from another vertigo attack in the future, don’t despair! Make your way to the chiropractor for near-instantaneous relief.

Condition #4: Neck Pain

Similar to back pain, neck pain is a common condition which chiropractors treat. The spine is a complicated structure and is also very delicate in many ways. Therefore, having a knowledgeable chiropractor assess and treat your neck pain is a decision you won’t regret!

From radiculopathies to slipped discs, and everything in between, chiropractors will clear up your neck pain and get you back in action quickly. Similar to sciatica, the nerves that branch off from the neck can often become irritated and can cause pain/numbness down the arms. This makes it difficult to work, drive, and even just get through the day.

If you’re suffering from pain in the neck, or anywhere else in the spine, ensure that you see a chiropractor ASAP.

Condition #5: Incontinence

While some forms of incontinence are a result of the aging process, in many cases, chiropractors can help patients regain control of their bowels and bladders. By targeting specific manipulations to the spine, and prescribing “pelvic floor” exercises, chiropractors can often help patients who suffer from various forms of incontinence.
