In today’s hectic world, it can be hard to find ways to reduce stress. In fact, stress management is now one of the most searched Google terms. Between meditation, dietary changes, and exercise, you may have found a good balance that keeps your stress levels low. But perhaps you’ve tried all of these things and you still feel extremely anxious and aren’t sure how to fully de-stress.

If this sounds like you, read on to see how chiropractic care can help you achieve stress relief.

Stress 101

Truthfully, stress is a term that can be hard to define. That being said, everyone has experienced stress in one form or another throughout their lives.

Stress can be thought of as anything that exerts pressure on a person’s body or mind. By this definition, many things that are good for us can be thought of as “stressful.” Case in point, exercise puts extreme stress on the body, but this stress leads to good health outcomes.

This type of stress is known as eustress or good stress.

But this is not the type of stress most people think of when they hear the term. Rather, most people think of the type of stress that keeps people up at night or the type of stress that makes one’s hair fall out.

This type of stress is not good for people, especially long term. Therefore, anything we can do to reduce this type of stress is seen as a good thing.

Stress Reduction Methods

As was hinted at in the introduction, there are tons of different ways to reduce stress.

In this section, we will briefly review some of these popular methods.

Meditation

By simply sitting and thinking, many people can significantly reduce their stress levels. There are various different kinds of meditation. However, nearly all of the schools of meditation focus on breathing, thinking deeply, and attempting to “clear one’s mind.”

Meditation can be very effective for some people. But other people need different techniques to help them with their stress.

Exercise

Running, walking, weightlifting, and other forms of exercise can go a long way toward reducing stress. Exercise signals the brain to release endorphins: chemicals that produce feelings of happiness and well-being.

While exercise is important, and can be very helpful for stressed-out people, the effects of this method are often transient.

Getting Adequate Sleep

One of the major causes of stress in the average American’s life is lack of sleep. Sleep is our body’s chance to reset and heal from the various things that happened throughout the day. When we don’t get enough sleep, our body is unable to adequately repair any injuries or issues. This can lead to chronic problems that may take months or years to heal.

There are tons of methods that can help people achieve better sleep including, but not limited to:

  • Sleep masks.
  • Blackout curtains.
  • White noise machines.
  • Refraining from electronic use before bed.

If you’re feeling stressed on a daily basis, odds are you haven’t been getting adequate sleep. Try out some of the above techniques if you feel like your sleep has been lacking!

Chiropractic Care

Chiropractic care offers an affordable, effective method for decreasing stress. Chiropractors work to realign the spine through the use of specific adjustments or manipulations. These techniques are safe and extremely effective for the treatment of many physical and psychological issues.
