What is anxiety and depression?
The feeling of anxiousness is classified as the feeling of extreme worry, panic attacks, flutter of heart with possibility of chest pains and increased breathing or shortness of breath. For depression it is the feeling of intense sadness, hopelessness and helplessness.
Where does it come from?
Currently, research has shown that your spine is an extension to the limbic system of your brain. Why is this important? It’s responsible for feelings and emotions for your entire body. Through the reward cascade, feelings and emotions you experience are derived from naturally occurring chemicals in your brain and spinal cord. They are transmitted to the brain through the blood-brain barrier and react upon the brain, signaling the activation of the limbic system. If there is an aberrant flow of chemical exchange into the brain via the cerebral spinal fluid surrounding the spinal cord, the proper chemical exchange may be compromised. Thus, in turn will cause the absorption into the brain to be off and can cause a change in those feelings and emotions of anxiousness and depression described above.
Both anxiety and depression are a result of a change in the chemical exchange in your brain, which is why they are grouped together as psychiatric disorders. they may be cousins of each other in that sense of they may originate from a common cause. They can both actually be treated with the same medications because of this which you may have heard of (Prozac, Zoloft, Lexapro, etc).
Did you know that 1 in 6 Americans are on a psychiatric drug? That comes to just over 54 million people, that’s a lot of people taking antidepressants! If you could manage these symptoms without needing to take medications, would you? I know I would.
Can chiropractic help to manage?
As we mentioned above, the chemical exchange into the brain is through the cerebral spinal fluid that surrounds the spinal cord. That fluid just so happens to run through the neck up into the brain. As chiropractors, we are proficient with the spine and its movement. What most people don’t know however is that about 90% of the exchange is directly related to the neck. So if the neck is off, what influence do you think that has on the chemical exchange? Through influencing the neck, chiropractic can help to regulate the chemical exchange into the brain and normalize it, thus helping to manage (not cure) anxiety and depression.
Dr. Alex uses the most advanced technique in chiropractic today, torque release technique (TRT). It utilized the most valid parts of every technique out there today to find the fastest and most effective way to find and remove subluxations in the body to allow it to heal. This technique allows us to adjust the spine without the need for twisting, cracking, or popping. Instead, it uses an instrument to gently help the body to heal. This technique is best for patients with chemical imbalances and allowing them to heal and manage their symptoms. Just because someone has been to a chiropractor before, doesn’t mean they have experienced the power of this technique.
